Roztěž Castle, Castle and cultural monument in Roztěž, Czech Republic
Roztěž Castle is a château and protected cultural monument in the village of Roztěž, sitting on the highest point of the surrounding hills. The building brings together residential rooms, service spaces, and outbuildings arranged around the main structure.
A wooden fortress was built here in the 14th century by Knight Bohuslav of Košice, forming the origin of what stands today. In 1666, Earl Jan Spork had it rebuilt as a hunting lodge, which changed its purpose and gave it much of its current appearance.
The estate grounds include an English-style park with a small chapel, both of which are visible from outside the property. Walking around the perimeter gives a sense of how a Bohemian country estate was laid out for both leisure and devotion.
The castle is privately occupied and not open to the public, so visits are limited to viewing the exterior from the road or nearby paths. A walk around the estate gives the best view of the building and the surrounding park.
A spring near the estate produces iron-rich water that once drew visitors who believed it had healing properties. This spring actually ran through the estate grounds, linking the natural landscape directly to the everyday life of the property.
