Town hall in Beroun, Renaissance town hall in Beroun, Czech Republic

The Town Hall of Beroun stands on the east side of Husovo Square, a two-storey building with a mansard roof topped by a slender lantern turret. Its facade is covered in stucco and figurative work by sculptor Vilém Amort: over-life-size male and female figures flank the entrance portal and carry the balcony, with herms, putti, coats of arms, garlands, the town coat of arms, a royal crown and a clock. Gothic vaulted cellars survive from two medieval houses joined to form it.

A town hall likely stood here in the Middle Ages; fires forced repeated rebuilds. The Renaissance form of 1560–1564 was the work of stonemason Jiří Táborský. Václav Bíšovec carried out a Baroque rebuilding in 1735, with further changes in 1781. In 1867 the municipal office moved to the U Černého koně house and the building held a boys' school, later a militia barracks. The costly Neo-Baroque reconstruction of 1903 followed plans by Beroun native František Coufal, and in 1998 a glazed wing was added.

The facade carries a sculptural group by Vilém Amort: an over-life-size man and woman flank the portal and support the balcony, with herms, putti, coats of arms, garlands, the town coat of arms, a royal crown and a clock. Inside, Amort decorated the second-floor hall ceiling in 1912 with putti and six species of trilobites.

The building sits at the center of Husovo Square and is easily reached on foot when walking through the historic old town area. Since it still serves administrative functions, visitors can admire the architecture from outside, and parts of the interior may be accessible during standard opening hours.

In the ground-floor ceiling near the entrance is a carved figure of the sprite Klepáček, also by Vilém Amort. Legend says he is the ghost of a mayor who refused to hand over the town treasury during an enemy invasion and was tortured to death; he is said to guard the hidden treasure and watch over the conduct of town officials.
