Church of Saint Nicholas, Romanesque church in Boletice, Czech Republic
The Church of Saint Nicholas sits on a hill called Olymp and blends Romanesque and Gothic elements. A tower displays Romanesque stonework, while the chancel features Gothic net vaulting.
Built in the second half of the 12th century, this church received national cultural monument status in 1958. It has survived through several centuries of regional change.
Medieval wall paintings decorate the chancel, revealing artistic practices from earlier centuries. Renaissance details from the 16th century also appear along the north side of the nave.
Access to the interior requires arranging a visit in advance with the person responsible for the site. The building opens mainly for cultural events and weddings.
The church stands alone in a landscape where the original settlement vanished after 1945 when the area became military training ground. It remains one of the few visible reminders of former human presence in the region.
