Church of Saint John the Baptist, Gothic church in Svojšice, Czech Republic

The Church of Saint John the Baptist in Svojšice has a square nave, a presbytery with a cross-ribbed vault, and a Baroque Chapel of Saint Barbara added in 1706 on the south side. A small tower roof dates from the first half of the 19th century. A round window with a four-lobed stone tracery in the presbytery's east wall is a notable detail, and a sundial is painted on the south exterior wall.

The presbytery and nave were built in early Gothic style, probably after 1250; the oldest written record dates from 1366. The chapel of Saint Barbara was added on the south side in 1706, followed in the 18th century by the sacristy and a porch before the west entrance. The church took its present form in 1787, and the roof trusses and bell turret date from the first half of the 19th century. It has been a protected cultural monument since 1964.

The church was originally dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, as shown by an 18th-century altarpiece with his attribute, the Martinmas goose. It became a filial church of Petrovice u Sušice parish at the end of 2019. The cemetery still serves Svojšice burials, and a memorial plaque recalls actor Jan Kaška (1810–1869), first buried here before his remains were moved to Olšany Cemetery in 1910.

The church stands in the middle of the cemetery, enclosed by a wall with massive buttresses on the north side; the entrance gate is on the west, where the memorial Svojšice lime tree grows and a stone cross stands before the gate. The building is not normally open outside services, so the exterior, the sundial on the south wall of the nave and the Gothic portal are what a visitor can see.

The church's oldest bell was cast by master bell-founder Jan Konvář and is over 500 years old. Inside are seven granite tomb slabs from the 16th and 17th centuries marking the burial places of local nobility. The altar painting of Saint Martin of Tours, with his attribute the Martinmas goose, shows the church was originally dedicated to him.
