Fryštát, Gothic and Renaissance castle in Karviná, Czech Republic
Fryštát is a castle in Karviná that stands on basalt rock and combines Gothic, Renaissance, and Neo-classical styles in its buildings. The complex includes a Renaissance courtyard decorated with sgraffito and around 65 furnished rooms with period pieces and decorative items.
The original wooden structure was built by the Piastov family in Gothic style, but a fire in 1511 destroyed much of it. The castle was rebuilt in Renaissance style after the fire and underwent Neo-classical changes during renovations.
The rooms inside display how the noble families who lived here arranged their homes and what they valued. You can see their furniture, decorative objects, and the wide range of metalwork they collected over time.
Access to the castle is only possible through guided tours that last around two hours and cover the main rooms and courtyard. Visitors should check ahead to ensure a tour is available during their stay.
The castle kitchen holds an unusual collection of historical copper and tin cooking vessels that spans centuries. These objects reveal what cooking methods and materials the noble families who lived here actually used.
