Hornické muzeum Harrachov, Mining museum in Harrachov, Czech Republic
The Hornické muzeum Harrachov is a museum set within a former fluorite mine featuring roughly 1000 meters of walkable tunnels. The route winds through underground passages with lighting and displays of mineral deposits and mining-related exhibits throughout.
The mine in Harrachov extracted fluorite from the 18th century onward under difficult conditions. The tunnels were later converted into a museum that opened in 2003 to preserve this industrial past.
The displays showcase the tools and objects that miners used every day, giving a sense of what their work and life in the tunnels were like. Walking through these exhibits, visitors experience how harsh and physical this labor was for local workers.
Visitors receive a protective helmet at the entrance and should bring warm layers, as the tunnels stay cool underground. Good footwear is essential since the ground can be uneven and damp in places.
The museum displays original working mining machinery including a complete hoisting system and an electric locomotive from the mine's operating days. These machines help visitors grasp the technical side of how extraction actually worked.
