Mertova díra, Mining adit in Slavoňov, Czech Republic
Mertova díra is a mining adit in Slavoňov with an entrance measuring about 1.2 meters wide and tall, positioned perpendicular to the Bohdasin stream near water level. The opening provides access to a tunnel system cut into the hillside.
The adit dates from a period when the region was explored for silver deposits. In the 1780s, mining specialists from Kutná Hora examined the tunnel and found traces of silver ore in the rock.
The iron grating at the entrance once held a statue of a miner, and local tradition later replaced it with a figure representing farmer Merta.
You can reach this site using marked hiking trails from Nové Město nad Metují to Slavoňov. Signage at the location provides background information about the mining history and the adit itself.
The tunnel runs straight for about 50 meters before turning downward, with water levels rising noticeably as you venture deeper into the passage. This creates a wet environment in the lower sections that changes how visitors experience the site.
