Vila na Rezku

Vila na Rezku is a wooden villa in Nové Město nad Metují featuring a rough-hewn sandstone plinth, varied roof forms, balconies, and dormers that showcase traditional Carpathian architectural influences. The ground floor organizes social spaces around a double-height living room, while the upper level contains bedrooms accessed through a staircase and surrounding porches.

Architect Dušan Jurkovič built this villa between 1900 and 1901 for Brno factory owner Robert Bartelmus, drawing on his earlier success with the Pustevny resort. The project marked a period of creative expansion for the architect as he refined his regional design approach.

The interior displays warm red, blue, and yellow-brown tones across carpets, furnishings, and curtains that reflect Czech folk traditions. These colors create the feeling of a home rooted in regional craft values from that time.

Access is gained through an exterior staircase and surrounding porch that connect the outdoor and indoor spaces. When visiting, allow time to explore the different rooms on each level, as the vertical layout with stairs requires some mobility.

The architect married Božena Bartelmus, daughter of the villa's original owner, in 1903, creating an unusual personal bond between designer and client. This connection may explain the exceptional care and attention to detail visible in the home's design.
