Burton Mound, Historical landmark near West Beach in Santa Barbara, United States

Burton Mound is an elevated area near West Beach that contains archaeological remains from an Indigenous settlement. The site reveals layers of human habitation and sits today within an urban residential neighborhood along West Mason Street.

The Chumash settlement Syujtun stood here when explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo traveled the coast in 1542. Later the land became a trading center and housed a large hotel before becoming a historical landmark.

This location was home to the Chumash people, whose daily activities are revealed through tools, pottery, and household items found during excavation. The artifacts show how residents fished, prepared food, and lived together as a community.

The location sits within a residential neighborhood and is easiest viewed from the surrounding street. A quick visit here provides a sense of how the landscape serves both modern living and historical preservation.

Archaeological work in the 1920s uncovered more than 2.500 objects that reveal how the Chumash organized their settlement. These discoveries form the foundation of understanding this early California coastal community.
