Allan Herschell 3-Abreast Carousel
Allan Herschell 3-Abreast Carousel, Historical carousel at Chase Palm Park, Santa Barbara, US.
The Allan Herschell 3-Abreast Carousel is a wooden ride featuring 35 hand-carved jumping horses and two benched chariots for group seating. The construction reflects early twentieth-century manufacturing methods and mechanical design from that era.
Built in 1916 by the Allan Herschell Company, this ride operated on the East Coast before moving to California. It traveled to San Diego in 1977 and then to Santa Barbara in 1999, representing decades of continuous operation across different locations.
The carousel displays traditional American craftsmanship through its detailed hand-carved details and gentle horse expressions. Visitors can see the care and skill that makers of that era put into creating something meant to bring joy to families.
The carousel sits in Chase Palm Park and is accessible to visitors walking through the grounds. Plan your visit during warmer months when families are more active in the park, and arrive when sunlight shows the carved details clearly.
This ride is one of only four large carousels manufactured by the Allan Herschell Company during the years 1915 to 1927. This rarity makes it a special discovery for visitors interested in amusement park history.
