Greenmeadow, Historic district in Palo Alto, United States.
Greenmeadow is a residential neighborhood in Palo Alto containing 243 single-story homes from the 1950s, marked by flat roofs, floor-to-ceiling windows, and open interior layouts. The houses display clean lines of Modern Movement design and create a cohesive visual identity despite individual variations.
The neighborhood was built in 1954 and 1955 by developer Joseph Eichler, who championed modern residential construction. Architects A. Quincy Jones and Frederick Emmons shaped the homes, which became part of a broader movement to reshape American suburbs.
The neighborhood represents a shift in how Americans wanted to live after World War II, with open floor plans and indoor-outdoor connections becoming central to home design.
The area is best explored on foot, allowing you to observe different homes and their details from the street. Keep in mind this is an active residential area where homes remain privately owned, so approach respectfully.
Original buyers could choose from six different home models and request customizations for their properties. This created personal touches within the unified design, giving each home its own character.
