Main Library, Research library in Urbana, United States.
The Main Library is a Georgian Revival building on the University of Illinois campus in Urbana, serving as the university's central research library. Built with limestone archways and a slate roof, it holds collections covering a wide range of academic subjects.
The building opened in 1924 as the third library structure on campus, replacing an earlier facility that had become too small for the growing university. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
The Main Library is known on campus as a place where students and researchers go to find rare books, manuscripts, and archival materials. The reading rooms have long been central to the academic life of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The building is currently undergoing renovation, so some areas may not be accessible during a visit. It is worth checking in advance which collections and reading rooms are open before you arrive.
The building follows a figure-eight floor plan with two enclosed courtyards, a layout that stood apart from the rectangular designs common on campus at the time. This arrangement allows natural light to reach the interior from multiple directions throughout the day.
