English Building, Educational building at University of Illinois, Urbana, United States.
The English Building is an educational structure at the University of Illinois in Urbana, situated on the west side of the Main Quad between Lincoln Hall and Henry Administration Building. It houses faculty offices and classrooms that support the university's humanities and arts curricula.
The building was completed in 1905 as the Woman's Building before being renamed Bevier Hall in 1947 after subsequent expansions. The Department of English has occupied the space since 1956.
The building's grand Neoclassical facade shapes how the Main Quad looks and feels to visitors walking across campus. Its large windows and symmetrical design create a sense of scholarly purpose that reflects the university's intellectual traditions.
The building sits on the west side of the Main Quad and is easy to reach from the center of campus. While it serves classes and offices, visitors can view the Neoclassical exterior and explore public hallways when no lectures are in session.
The building was initially designed for women students, with the Household Science Department in the north wing and the Dean of Women's offices in the south wing. These origins remain visible in how the spaces are arranged, even though their purpose has shifted significantly.
