English Building, Educational building at University of Illinois, Urbana, United States.
The English Building is a campus building at the University of Illinois in Urbana, located on the west side of the Main Quad between Lincoln Hall and the Henry Administration Building. It contains faculty offices and classrooms used by the Department of English.
The building opened in 1905 as the Woman's Building, intended to serve female students on campus. It was renamed Bevier Hall in 1947 and later became home to the Department of English in 1956.
The building's Neoclassical facade is one of the most recognized faces along the Main Quad, giving the western edge of the quad a formal, scholarly look. Inside, the hallways and rooms are used almost entirely for literature and writing courses, giving the space a quiet, bookish character.
The building is easy to find along the west side of the Main Quad, close to the center of campus. Visitors can walk through the public hallways and view the exterior at any time, though the space is primarily intended for students and faculty.
When the building first opened, the north wing was set aside for the Household Science Department and the south wing for the Dean of Women's offices, each with a distinct purpose. The original layout of the building still reflects this division, even though neither program exists there today.
