Portsmouth Cottage Hospital, hospital in New Hampshire, United States
Portsmouth Cottage Hospital is a former hospital building in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, constructed in 1895 as a two-and-a-half-story brick structure in Colonial Revival style. Located on Junkins Avenue south of South Mill Pond, it served as an active hospital for over seventy years before being converted to senior housing.
The facility first opened in 1884 in a private residence before relocating to its permanent brick building in 1895 to serve the growing community. It closed in 1965 when a modern hospital opened nearby, and was later converted to senior housing named Connors Cottage.
The building is now called Connors Cottage, named after a former mayor who helped save and transform it for new use. Its brick walls and simple design remain visible, connecting visitors to Portsmouth's past and the community's long tradition of caring for others.
The building sits on a hill south of South Mill Pond on Junkins Avenue and is accessible from the street. Since it now serves as senior housing, viewing the exterior and appreciating its architecture from outside is the best way to visit.
Timothy Connors, the mayor after whom the building is now named, was actually born in this hospital in 1937. His personal connection to the facility later inspired him to help preserve and transform it into senior housing.
