Mountain Shoals Plantation
Mountain Shoals Plantation, Historic plantation in Enoree, South Carolina.
Mountain Shoals Plantation is a two-story Federal-style residence in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, featuring a raised brick basement with stucco cladding across its exterior. A full-width covered porch extends along the front facade, and the grounds include a log cabin dating to 1815 alongside the main house.
James Nesbitt constructed this plantation residence by 1837 as a significant agricultural estate that operated during the antebellum period in South Carolina. The property gained National Register of Historic Places recognition in 1979, acknowledging its regional historical importance.
The main residence displays the architectural choices that plantation owners favored in the 19th century, while the preserved log cabin from 1815 reflects the simpler construction methods of early settlers. Together, these buildings tell a story about the different craftsmanship traditions and social distinctions that shaped the region during that era.
The property sits at the junction of U.S. 221 and SC 92, making it easy to locate and access from main roads. The grounds span about 2.8 acres, providing enough space to walk through and observe both the main house and supporting structures at a comfortable pace.
The brick basement was treated with a specialized stucco process designed to mimic the appearance of polished granite, showcasing the craftsmanship of the original builders. This visual effect remains visible today and offers a subtle yet intriguing detail for observant visitors to notice.
