Swain County Courthouse, Gerichtsgebäude in den Vereinigten Staaten
The Swain County Courthouse is a two-story Classical Revival building with four Ionic columns on its front facade, located in Bryson City. The structure was completed in 1908 and features a hip roof and symmetrical proportions that give it a balanced, formal appearance.
The building was designed in 1908 by Frank Pierce Milburn and R. S. Smith and is the third courthouse in Swain County. It replaced an earlier structure from 1880, which itself had replaced a log building that burned down in 1872.
The building bears the county name and stands at the center of Bryson City, where it has been part of local life for more than a century. People use it today as a museum to remember their past and to share the stories of those who came before them.
The building now houses the Swain County Heritage Museum with free exhibits that accept donations to support operations. Visitors will find an information center on site that provides details about local activities such as hiking, waterfall visits, and rafting.
Inside the museum are a restored log cabin porch and an 1887 church organ that document the daily life of early settlers. There are also desks from a one-room schoolhouse that offer insight into the region's historical education.
