The district contains 41 frame wood-shingled cottages along the North Carolina coast, featuring Late Gothic Revival and Queen Anne architectural styles.
The first homes in the district started as simple structures in the mid-1800s, built from salvaged wood collected from shipwrecks along the beach.
Multiple generations of families maintain ownership of these historic cottages, preserving traditions and memories through written records on the cottage walls.
The historic district covers 2,083 acres along U.S. 158, allowing visitors to examine the architectural elements of early coastal residential construction.
Spider Villa, established in the 1840s, stands as the oldest structure in the district, while the Outlaw cottage from 1885 represents the most recent addition.
