Dr. William Rainey Holt House
Dr. William Rainey Holt House, Greek Revival residence in Lexington, United States.
The Holt House is a two-story frame building featuring three bays, Palladian windows, and a distinctive hipped roof located on South Main Street. An original kitchen building stands separately on the property and now serves the Davidson County Historical Museum as part of its educational programs on regional architecture.
The house was built in 1834 as a wedding gift and later served as headquarters for Union General H. Judson Kilpatrick and his 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry during the 1865 Reconstruction period. The presence of Northern troops during this pivotal time left an indelible mark on both the building and the family's story.
Wall signatures left by the Holt daughters offer a glimpse into family life within these rooms during the 1800s. Original black iron brackets installed throughout the house reflect the household's attention to both function and appearance.
The property is now part of the Davidson County Historical Museum and visitors can explore it through scheduled tours. Check ahead to confirm visiting hours, as the site does not remain open at all times.
After the Union troops departed, General Kilpatrick left behind unusual parting gifts for the Holt family, including gold pieces and provisions. This rare gesture of goodwill from a military commander to civilians speaks to an unexpected connection forged during wartime.
