Welwyn Preserve, Natural preserve in Glen Cove, New York, US.
Welwyn Preserve is a 204-acre nature reserve on Long Island's North Shore that includes woodlands, salt marshes, and butterfly gardens. The property connects these different habitats through a network of walking trails.
Oil businessman Harold Irving Pratt built the Georgian mansion in 1906, and it remained a private estate until Harriet Pratt's death in 1969. After that, the property transformed into the nature preserve it is today.
The main house now serves as a Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center where visitors can explore exhibits and learn about historical events through educational programs.
The reserve is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM and weekends from noon to 4:00 PM. Dogs are not permitted anywhere on the property.
Abandoned greenhouses with concrete basements on the property once served as a training facility for the Nassau County Sheriff's Department. These hidden structures reveal the site's layered past.
