Manhattan House is a 21-story residential building at Third and Second Avenues that spans an entire city block. The structure features a central spine with five extending wings, white brick facades, 582 apartments ranging from two to seven rooms, and ground-level retail spaces.
The building was constructed between 1949 and 1951 using designs by Gordon Bunshaft for the New York Life Insurance Company. It replaced a 19th-century carriage barn that once stood at the site.
Manhattan House drew residents such as clarinetist Benny Goodman and actress Grace Kelly, who lived there before becoming Princess of Monaco. The building's name and white-brick modern profile became a reference for middle-class apartment living on the Upper East Side, and its 2007 city landmark designation recognized that role.
Main entrances face 66th Street on the north side, while storefronts line Second and Third Avenues. The site slopes down toward Second Avenue, where the building sits 18 ft (5.5 m) lower than at Third Avenue. A granite-block wall separates the through and local roadways of widened 66th Street, lined with plane trees.
The site slopes 18 ft (5.5 m) from the Third Avenue end down to the Second Avenue end, so the building steps with the grade. New York Life donated a 40 ft strip along 66th Street so the city could widen the street to 100 ft, with separate through and local roadways divided by a granite-block wall and lined with plane trees.
