Manhattan House, Modern apartment building at 200 East 66th Street, Manhattan, US.
Manhattan House is a 21-story residential building at Third and Second Avenues that spans an entire city block. The structure features a central spine with five extending wings, white brick facades, 582 apartments ranging from two to seven rooms, and ground-level retail spaces.
The building was constructed between 1949 and 1951 using designs by Gordon Bunshaft for the New York Life Insurance Company. It replaced a 19th-century carriage barn that once stood at the site.
The building stretches across the block with clean lines and white facades that reflect post-war modernism in residential design. Visitors today see the same generous windows and balconies that redefined urban living in that era.
The building is easily accessible on foot from multiple corners and features extensive glazed balconies visible from many units. Ground-level retail areas provide shopping options and create an active street presence.
The roof extends across the building's full length as an extensive garden with plantings and open areas. This hidden space on top provides residents with nature in the heart of the urban block.
