Royal Rosarian, Bronze sculpture in Washington Park, Portland, US
The Royal Rosarian is a bronze sculpture within the International Rose Test Garden depicting a greeter performing a signature hat-tipping gesture. The work occupies a discrete spot amid the expansive rose plantings and ranks among a handful of bronze figures scattered throughout Washington Park.
The sculpture was installed in 2011 to mark the centennial of the Royal Rosarian organization, which had been serving the community for a full hundred years. Artist Bill Bane created the work as a permanent tribute to the group's long history of civic involvement.
The sculpture represents Portland's official greeters and goodwill ambassadors who actively participate in city ceremonies and events. It serves as a symbol of the community's commitment to hospitality and civic engagement.
The sculpture sits within the International Rose Test Garden, so plan to spend time exploring the grounds to locate it among the flower beds. A park map or guide helps you find it quickly while discovering other features of the larger Washington Park complex.
The Royal Rosarian Foundation and organization members themselves raised the funds to commission this sculpture, showing how much the group values its own legacy. This approach to securing a permanent tribute was driven entirely by the community commitment behind the greeter movement.
