Vermonica

Vermonica is a sculpture made of 25 street lights arranged in a row along Santa Monica Boulevard at Lyman Place. Each light comes from a different period and shows the various lighting styles that Los Angeles used between 1925 and 1992.

The sculpture was created in 1993 following the Los Angeles riots as a way to transform a damaged shopping center into public art. It became a symbol of rebuilding and community recovery in East Hollywood.

The sculpture displays street lights that served different neighborhoods and eras in Los Angeles through their distinct designs. Each lamp tells a visual story about how the city changed over time.

The sculpture is located on Santa Monica Boulevard opposite the Cahuenga Branch Library and is freely accessible to the public. It sits outdoors along the street, making it easy to view at any time of day.

Each light was salvaged from its original location throughout the city and brought together for this installation. They represent actual equipment that once illuminated neighborhoods during different decades of Los Angeles growth.
