Star Apartments, Permanent supportive housing in Skid Row, Los Angeles, United States.
Star Apartments is a six-story residential building in Los Angeles housing 102 apartments alongside community facilities. The structure contains an onsite medical clinic and a large health and wellness center for residents.
Architect Michael Maltzan designed the building, which opened in 2014 and transformed a single-story commercial structure into a modern residential complex. This conversion marked an important step in repurposing existing structures for new housing in the city.
The building serves as a home for people moving away from homelessness and rebuilding their lives. They find not only apartments but also spaces dedicated to health services and community programs within the same structure.
The building is located near public transportation and accessible from the street. Keep in mind this is a residential facility for residents, so access to certain areas may be limited.
The building was constructed using prefabricated residential modules placed over an existing structure – an innovative method applied for the first time in Los Angeles. This construction approach enabled faster completion and demonstrated new possibilities for housing development in the city.
