Dr. D. D. Hooper House

The Dr. D. D. Hooper House is a 2-story wooden structure with a hipped roof and asymmetrical lower cross gables located in Sylva. The building features single-story wings extending from both sides and currently serves as home to the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce.

The residence was built in 1906 as both a home and medical office for Dr. D. D. Hooper and served this dual purpose until the 1930s. An additional wing was added during that era to accommodate the changing needs of the property.

The building displays a blend of Victorian and Queen Anne design elements that reflect the architectural tastes of early 20th century North Carolina. These features remain visible in the ornamental details and unbalanced layout of the structure.

The building is located at 773 West Main Street and welcomes public visits during its hours of operation. The location offers convenient street-level access in downtown Sylva, making it easy to find and visit.

The property nearly faced demolition in 2002 but was rescued by dedicated preservation efforts. Today it functions as a community center and heritage gallery, showing how historic buildings can be revived for public benefit.
