Carlin Canyon

Carlin Canyon is a narrow gorge cut by the Humboldt River through Nevada's rocky landscape, with steep rock walls rising on both sides. The waterway has shaped this confined passage over thousands of years, creating a dramatic natural corridor.

This canyon served as a key passage for pioneers moving westward in the 1800s, who had to navigate the narrow route between the rock walls. Later, railroad builders and road makers followed the same natural corridor through the mountains.

The California Trail Interpretive Center near the canyon presents exhibits about pioneer journeys and early American settlement through this challenging passage.

The canyon is easily accessible from Interstate 80, with pullouts and parking areas offering views of the gorge and river. You can stop along the highway to see the rock formations without needing a long hike.

Visitors often notice striking bands of color in the rock walls that reveal different geological layers and periods. These visible strata tell the story of Earth's formation across millions of years.
