Burnside Plantation House, Federal style plantation house in Williamsboro, North Carolina.
Burnside Plantation House is a 2-story dwelling with five bays and weatherboard walls that display the hallmarks of Federal-style architecture. Paired brick chimneys at each gable end provide key structural and design elements typical of homes from this period.
Construction began around 1800 and the house received alterations before 1824 as owner preferences shifted. Memucan Hunt, who served as North Carolina's first state treasurer, was an early owner of the property.
The carved woodwork inside reflects how people of that era valued skilled craftsmanship and decorated their homes with detailed joinery work.
The property spans several acres with colonial-era outbuildings including a smokehouse from 1760 that visitors can explore. Plan enough time to walk the grounds and view both the main house and its surrounding structures.
Pinckney Hunt, daughter of an early resident, became the mother of General Douglas MacArthur, linking this plantation house to a major figure in American military history. Her descendants thus carried forward the family legacy through one of the nation's most prominent military leaders.
