Vermilyea Inn Historic District, Historic district in Aboite Township, United States.
The Vermilyea Inn Historic District is a settlement area with four historic buildings southwest of Fort Wayne. The main structure is a two-story brick building in Federal style with wings and original roof designs from the 1830s.
The site was established in the 1830s and served as an important point along the Wabash and Erie Canal. Remains of the canal infrastructure, including a timber platform of the canal aqueduct, are still visible on the grounds today.
The buildings show how early Indiana settlers built and decorated their homes in the 1830s. Visitors can see the craftsmanship and local building traditions of that era reflected in the structures.
The district sits on a site spanning several acres and can be explored on foot. It is surrounded by rural countryside, so comfortable shoes and weather protection are recommended.
The original building worked both as a home and a lodging place for travelers moving along the canal route. This made the site a central meeting point for people passing through the area.
