Echo Lake, lake of the United States of America
Echo Lake is a mountain lake on Mount Desert Island in Maine, located within Acadia National Park near the base of Beech Mountain Cliffs and surrounded by forested terrain. The lake reaches an average depth of about 66 feet and is ringed by hiking trails that connect to higher elevations and provide views of the surrounding landscape.
Echo Lake formed roughly 9,000 years ago when glacial activity carved valleys and left behind depressions that filled with water over time. Today it remains a natural feature of Mount Desert Island, now protected as part of Acadia National Park's designated landscape.
The area is easy to access via the free Island Explorer shuttle bus or Route 102 by car, with a beach area equipped with restrooms and changing facilities. Lifeguard coverage runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and sturdy hiking shoes are recommended since water temperatures remain cold even in warmer months.
Water temperatures climb to roughly 21 degrees Celsius in summer, making this one of the warmer lakes in the region and more pleasant for swimming. A single trail connects directly from the lake shore to the summit of the adjacent Beech Mountain Cliffs, offering a dramatic shift in elevation within a short distance.
