Buckeye Lake State Park, Recreation area in Fairfield County, United States
Buckeye Lake State Park is a recreation area covering about 3,349 acres (1,355 hectares) with a large lake, multiple islands, and extensive shoreline for outdoor activities. The park features swimming beaches, boat ramps, docks, and picnic areas distributed around the water.
The site began in 1826 as Licking Summit Reservoir, built to supply water to the Ohio and Erie Canal system during Ohio's early growth. The reservoir was central to the state's transportation and development efforts at that time.
The park served as a gathering place during the 1940s and 1950s when families came to enjoy live music and social gatherings in the amusement area. This tradition of community gathering remains part of how people use the space today.
The park has nine boat launch areas, multiple swimming beaches, and picnic spots with grilling equipment spread throughout the grounds. Plan visits during warmer months when all facilities are fully operational and water conditions are best for recreation.
The park contains Cranberry Bog, a floating island that separated from the lake bottom in 1826 and holds rare plant species found nowhere else. Access to this natural formation requires special permits to preserve its delicate ecosystem.
