Alligator Effigy Mound, Archaeological site in Granville, Ohio, United States.
Alligator Effigy Mound is an earthen structure shaped like a creature and stretches across a considerable distance on a hillside in Licking County. The formation displays a recognizable head, body, and legs built into the natural landscape and now sits within a residential area.
The earthwork was built around 950 AD by the Fort Ancient culture, as confirmed through carbon dating conducted decades later. Earlier researchers had incorrectly attributed the mound to a different cultural group.
The shape may represent a spiritual being from Native American traditions rather than a simple animal figure. Local understanding suggests this earthwork held deep symbolic meaning in the religious beliefs of the people who built it.
Access to the site is available through a public road that runs through a residential neighborhood. Visitors should be aware that the grounds are located on private property and respect for the surrounding area is expected.
Only two of these mysterious earthen formations remain in Ohio, making this structure a rare survivor of an ancient artistic practice. Its significance lies not just in what archaeologists can learn, but in the window it opens to a time when people shaped the land itself as art.
