Tolerance, Aluminum sculpture at Buffalo Bayou Park, Houston, United States
Tolerance consists of seven human-shaped aluminum wire frame figures standing on granite pedestals arranged along the waterfront. The work stretches across the walking path, forming a contemplative sequence within the park landscape.
Spanish artist Jaume Plensa created this work in 2011 as part of Houston's effort to enrich public spaces with meaningful art. The installation followed the city's strategy to expand cultural offerings through significant art projects.
The figures show different human forms and bear text in many languages, reflecting Houston's multicultural population and its global connections.
The sculpture group is easily accessible through Buffalo Bayou Park's walking trails, particularly from the Allen Parkway area. The best visiting time is during daylight hours, though the installation also offers a different perspective after dark for those who wish to experience it from another angle.
The work contains internal lighting systems that make it glow from within as darkness falls, giving the artwork an entirely different dimension. This lighting technology transforms the installation into a nighttime experience that allows different perceptions between day and night.
