Houston Police Officer Memorial, Police memorial in Buffalo Bayou Park, US
The Houston Police Officer Memorial is a memorial located in Buffalo Bayou Park, featuring a large granite structure shaped as a Greek cross with a central stepped pyramid and four sunken pyramids in each arm. The overall width spans approximately 120 feet.
The memorial was built in 1991 as the result of fundraising efforts by multiple foundations including Knox, Cullen, and Brown to honor fallen officers. These collective efforts created a lasting place of remembrance for the city.
The memorial displays the names of over one hundred Houston police officers who died in the line of duty, inscribed on pink granite slabs. These names form the core of the site where visitors pay their respects.
The memorial is located in Buffalo Bayou Park at Allen Parkway and is accessible for visitors with mobility limitations, with a reflecting pool near the parking area. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when the site is less crowded.
The memorial was designed by Texas artist Jesus Bautista Moroles, who created an architectural vision featuring a central pyramid rising about 12.5 feet above ground. The design combines geometric forms with water to create a contemplative space.
