Downtown Aquarium

Downtown Aquarium showcases more than 500 aquatic species spread across different themed areas such as rainforest, shipwreck, and open ocean within a complex covering about 6 acres. The facility combines aquarium tanks with amusement rides and dining spaces inside a historic building near the heart of Houston.

The site opened in 2003 when a company converted the old Central Waterworks Building from 1927 into an aquarium complex while keeping parts of the original structure. This building once supplied water to the city and became a popular family destination after its transformation.

The restaurant area sits beneath a large glass dome that lets natural light pour into the halls, creating a space where architecture and marine life come together. Families move between the tanks and the rides, turning a visit here into a day that mixes entertainment with learning about the ocean.

The complex sits at 410 Bagby Street and opens every day, with longer hours on weekends. Parking options include both self-parking and valet service, making arrival easier for those driving in.

Guests can eat in a restaurant surrounded by a 150,000-gallon tank while white tigers live in their enclosure next to the dining space. This unusual pairing turns a meal here into an experience hard to find elsewhere.
