Wells Fargo Plaza, Glass skyscraper in Downtown Houston, United States
Wells Fargo Plaza is a glass skyscraper in downtown Houston with 71 above-ground floors and 4 levels below street level. The structure connects directly to the city's underground tunnel network and includes a health club facility for tenants and members.
The building was completed in 1983 by the architecture firm Skidmore Owings Merrill and has undergone several name changes over time. It started as Allied Bank Plaza, became First Interstate Bank Plaza, and is now known as Wells Fargo Plaza.
The building has public sky lobbies on upper floors that offer sweeping views of Houston to visitors. These spaces serve as gathering areas within the tower and allow people to experience the city from above.
The building connects directly to the tunnel system, making it possible to enter without dealing with outdoor conditions. Visitors should explore the public lobby areas during standard business hours, as access to certain areas may be limited at other times.
Shortly after completion, the tower suffered major window and structural damage during Hurricane Alicia in 1983. This led to reinforced modifications to the building to better withstand future severe weather events.
