Total Plaza, Skyscraper in Downtown Houston, United States
Total Plaza is a 35-story tower at 1201 Louisiana in downtown Houston, one block from the Allen Center complex. Designed by Lloyd, Morgan & Jones, it opened in 1971 and was renovated in 1981 and 1996. Its exterior is finished in reflective mirrored glass, and each floor offers about 24,000 sq ft, for a total of 847,200 sq ft. The building connects to the downtown Houston tunnel system.
The tower at 1201 Louisiana opened in 1971 as the Entex Building, designed by Lloyd, Morgan & Jones. Mercure Co. N.Y. bought it in 1975 for US$40 million, and it was sold again in 1984. Renamed Louisiana Place after a 1996 renovation, it took the name Total Plaza around 2005 when Total Petrochemicals USA leased 150,000 sq ft and moved hundreds of employees in.
The Petroleum Club moved to the 35th floor from the ExxonMobil Building, opening its new quarters in 2015. Houston firm Kirksey designed the space with gold, bronze and metallic colours tied to the energy industry, and added a bar requested by younger members, looking out over the Houston skyline.
The building is located in the downtown area and is accessible during business days. Visitors should note that access may vary depending on events or building operations.
Total Plaza underwent multiple name changes, including Louisiana Place and United Gas Building, before receiving its current name from tenant Total Petrochemicals USA.
