African American Library at the Gregory School

The African American Library at the Gregory School occupies a restored two-story brick building from 1926 in the Fourth Ward neighborhood.

The Gregory Institute, established in 1870, served as the first educational institution for African American children in Houston during the Reconstruction period.

The library maintains extensive archives documenting African American experiences through photographs, manuscripts, oral histories, and historical records from the Houston region.

Visitors can access digital collections, attend monthly meetings, and participate in educational programs focused on African American history every second Tuesday.

The building features a preserved classroom that maintains its original 1926 configuration, displaying period-specific educational materials and furnishings.
