St. Augustine's Church

St. Augustine's Church is a Gothic Revival structure with two spires in Austin, Minnesota, built from red pressed brick with red sandstone trim from Wisconsin. The interior accommodates more than 600 people within spacious proportions designed for community worship.

The cornerstone was laid in 1894 and construction finished in 1896, marking the establishment of a permanent Catholic presence in Austin. The building rose during a period of regional growth when religious institutions played a central role in community life.

The church was built as a center for Austin's Catholic community and continues to serve as a gathering place for religious services and local events. The structure reflects the strong faith traditions that early settlers brought to the region.

A lightning strike in 1976 caused significant damage to the steeple but swift action prevented the fire from spreading to the rest of the building. Locals still recall this event as a moment when the community came together to protect their landmark.
