Watkins Glen High School, historic high school building located at Watkins Glen in Schuyler County, New York
Watkins Glen High School is a three-story brick building constructed in 1929 and designed in Neoclassical style, located on North Decatur Street. Its most striking features are the tall Doric columns supporting the front entrance and a triangular pediment above, creating a formal and balanced facade.
The school was built in 1929 and expanded in 1958 to accommodate more students as the community grew. It operated as a high school until 1969 and later as a middle school, before closing in 2013 and being added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.
The school served as a gathering place for generations and remains a recognizable landmark in the town. Its formal classical design reflects the values that the community placed on education and public buildings.
The building is located on North Decatur Street in central Watkins Glen and is easily accessible on foot. Since the building now contains private apartments, visitors can view and photograph the exterior architecture from the street.
After closing in 2013, the building was converted into senior housing with approximately fifty apartments while preserving historic features like the gymnasium and auditorium for community use. This adaptive reuse demonstrates how historic school buildings can serve new purposes while maintaining their place in local heritage.
