Alice Wainwright Park, Park in Miami, US
Alice Wainwright Park is a public park along Brickell Avenue in Miami, sitting on the edge of Biscayne Bay. It is split into two levels, with the upper part holding open lawns, a basketball court, and a playground, and the lower part running close to the water with outdoor exercise equipment.
The land was once covered by a large tropical forest known as Brickell Hammock, which stretched northward from this area before much of it was cleared. The park was later named in honor of Alice C. Wainwright, whose work in local government helped protect green spaces in Miami.
The park is named after Alice C. Wainwright, the first woman to serve on Miami's City Commission. Today it draws families, joggers, and cyclists who treat it as a regular part of their daily routine along the bay.
The park is open every day from sunrise to sunset and is free to enter. Parking on site is also free but limited, so arriving early on busy days is a good idea.
In the northeast corner of the park, there is a small fenced-off forest patch that is one of the last remnants of the original Brickell Hammock, a tropical forest that once covered much of this coastline. Visitors cannot walk into it, but it is visible from the paths and gives a sense of what the land looked like before the city grew around it.
