Cerro Pelon Ranch, Modern architectural ranch in Santa Fe County, United States
Cerro Pelon Ranch is a large property in the Galisteo Basin with multiple residential buildings, horse facilities, and extensive grounds surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo and Ortiz Mountains. The landscape includes open grasslands along the river valley with structures ranging from traditional buildings to contemporary homes.
Bill Cook acquired the property in the late 1970s and developed it as a film production location in the following years. The construction of a western town set for the 1984 film Silverado became a defining feature and the structure remained available for use by other filmmakers afterward.
The land contains petroglyphs, pictographs, and remnants of ancestral Puebloan homes scattered along the Galisteo River that still runs through the property. These marks and structures tell the story of people who lived here for centuries before modern times.
The property is privately owned with limited public access, so visitors should check ahead about any available tours or special viewing opportunities. The landscape surrounding the ranch offers hiking and exploration of the area if access is granted.
Fashion designer Tom Ford commissioned a renowned architect to create a contemporary concrete and glass residence that sits within the natural mountain landscape without dominating it. This modern addition contrasts sharply with the remnants of the old film set structures on the property.
