Transgender Memorial Garden, Memorial garden in Benton Park West, St. Louis, US.
The Transgender Memorial Garden is a memorial garden in the Benton Park West neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, planted with native trees, wildflowers, and dedicated garden beds. Pathways run through the site, making it an open, walkable space for remembrance.
The garden was created in late 2015 by chef Leon Braxton Jr. through the Plant4PeaceSTL initiative. It is recognized as the first memorial garden of its kind in the United States.
The garden is a place where people gather to remember those who have died and to share their stories. During memorial events, it becomes a meeting point for the local transgender community and its allies.
The garden is open year-round and can be visited at any time on your own. Coming during calm weather gives you the best chance to walk through and take in the plantings at your own pace.
The garden was built in part using salvaged materials from demolished buildings in the surrounding area. These recovered pieces are visibly incorporated throughout the site, giving it a character that sets it apart from other memorial spaces.
