Porcupine Lake Wilderness is a protected natural area in Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest containing multiple lakes and thick forest. The terrain features glacially-formed landscape with interconnected water bodies and walking paths that connect different parts of the land.
This land gained official protection status in 1984 through state wilderness legislation. Glaciers shaped the lakes and forest layout thousands of years ago, leaving behind the geography visitors see today.
The North Country National Scenic Trail crosses the wilderness from east to west, offering eight miles of hiking paths through native Wisconsin landscapes.
This land is open year-round with walking routes and fishing opportunities on the lakes. Snow cover in winter opens possibilities for cross-country skiing, while warmer months make fishing and water activities more comfortable.
The wilderness features six lakes larger than five acres, surrounded by sugar maples, red maples, yellow birches, white pine, red pine, and hemlock trees.
