Bois Doré

Bois Doré is a limestone mansion with twenty-three bedrooms, fourteen bathrooms, and a grand entrance hall connecting its east and west wings. The estate features a spacious ballroom decorated with an antique Regency chandelier.

Investment banker William Fahnestock commissioned architect Charles A. Platt to design this residence, completed in 1927. The mansion was built during Newport's height as a favored retreat for wealthy businessmen.

The dining room displays hand-painted wall murals by artist Martin Battersby showing characters from the French court, created using trompe l'oeil technique directly on the walls.

The property is situated along Narragansett Avenue and bordered by linden trees that frame the entrance beautifully. Visitors should allow adequate time to explore the interior spaces and exterior architectural details throughout the grounds.

The name means gilded wood and refers to the radiant linden trees lining the driveway that inspired the estate's poetic title. This botanical feature adds an unexpected personal touch to the entire property.
