The Monument to Women Memorial Garden spans two acres and contains twelve bronze sculptures depicting different aspects of women's lives and relationships.
The garden, dedicated on June 30, 1978, replaced an earlier 1933 Relief Society monument during a period of national discussion about women's societal roles.
The sculptures, created by artists Dennis Smith and Florence Hansen, represent various dimensions of womanhood including motherhood, education, service, and personal development.
Located behind the Historic Nauvoo Visitors Center, the monument features brick pathways connecting different statue installations throughout the landscaped gardens.
The dedication ceremony in 1978 brought together 7,200 people, marking the largest gathering of women in Nauvoo since the 1840s.
