The Walter A. Sheaffer House is a 2½-story brick Jacobean-style residence completed in 1930 at the top of a 200-foot bluff above the Mississippi River in Fort Madison. Its Tudor Revival features include two stone-parapeted gables, two dormers with half-timbered gable ends, a two-story stone-framed bay window and a porte cochere with three flattened Tudor arches; Renaissance Revival corner and window quoins complete the design. The single-story brick garage cottage, with three garage entrances in an exposed basement, held the living quarters of the Sheaffers' butler-chauffeur and his wife, the family cook.

Walter A. Sheaffer, inventor of the lever-filled fountain pen and founder of the Sheaffer Pen Company, built this 16,000-square-foot house as part of a family complex. Completed in 1930 to designs by the Chicago firm Mayo and Mayo, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006 together with its garage cottage. Walter's son Craig and daughter-in-law Virginia built their own NRHP-listed house just to the east in 1929.

The garage cottage housed the Sheaffers' butler/chauffeur and his wife, who worked as the family's cook, so the household staff lived on the estate itself. The main house is one of a family complex: the Craig and Virginia Sheaffer House, built in 1929 for Walter's son and daughter-in-law, stands just to the east, and two later houses were built for their sons Walter and John.

The house stands at the top of a 200-foot (61 m) bluff above the Mississippi River in Fort Madison, so the grounds are reached on foot from the street and the river side drops away steeply. The garage cottage's three garage entrances open into an exposed basement, meaning vehicles enter at a lower level than the main floor. The property is a private residence and not open for tours.

The garage cottage, part of the 2006 National Register listing, was the living quarters for the Sheaffers' butler/chauffeur and his wife, who also cooked for the family. Its three garage entrances sit in an exposed basement, and the single-story brick building is laid in common bond.
