First Federal Savings and Loan Association Building
First Federal Savings and Loan Association Building, Modern bank building in Downtown Davenport, United States.
The First Federal Savings and Loan Association Building is a modern bank structure in downtown Davenport featuring white Vermont marble cladding and a solid architectural approach. The design emphasizes mass and material over the open glass styles that defined many buildings of its period.
Constructed between 1965 and 1966, the building marked First Federal's growth from a Depression-era institution into the region's largest savings association. The timing of its construction reflected the bank's growing economic strength during that period.
The structure moves away from the glass-box designs common to its time, instead emphasizing solid forms and masonry that shaped how banks were built in Iowa afterward.
The building sits in downtown Davenport and is easy to reach on foot, with its distinctive white marble exterior making it simple to spot. Today the space serves educational purposes through Scott Community College following major renovation work.
The original design included an interior drive-through lane where vehicles could enter from Main Street and exit onto West Third Street. This feature represented an innovative approach to banking services during the time it was built.
