Powerhouse Theater, Theater in Poughkeepsie, United States
The Powerhouse Theater occupies a converted power station on the Vassar College campus with a black box performance space and movable seating that adapts to different production styles. The interior is designed so audiences and performers sit very close to each other.
Built as a power station in 1912, the building was transformed into a theater in 1973 while keeping its industrial exterior intact. This conversion brought a new cultural venue to the college campus.
The summer program draws theater artists who work on new pieces and develop experimental performances in the space. Many of these productions have later found success in major theaters across the country.
Tickets are available through the theater website for shows during the school year and for summer workshops and readings. Check the schedule ahead of time to find out when performances are happening during your visit.
Unlike many other theaters, the building kept its rough brick walls and industrial character on the outside, making it look different from typical cultural buildings. The audience takes up only one-third of the floor area, leaving the rest for performers and flexible staging.
