METALmorphosis, Steel fountain in Whitehall Corporate Center, Charlotte, US.
METALmorphosis is a fountain made of stainless steel with 40 rotating plates arranged in seven segments that form a giant head when aligned. The plates move independently through motorized systems, creating a constantly changing sculptural form.
The work was designed and installed by Czech artist David Cerny at the Whitehall Corporate Center in the early 2000s. It combined traditional fountain design with cutting-edge mechanical technology of that era.
The sculpture demonstrates how mechanical precision and water combine within a corporate setting. Visitors can observe the rotating plates as an active conversation between engineering and artistry.
The fountain sits near the office building on Arco Corporate Drive and is freely accessible to the public. It operates year-round, with the best experience coming when you spend time watching the slow rotation of the plates.
Water flows from the mouth of the metal head, but only when all 40 plates align in perfect synchronization. This rare moment brings together water, motion, and precise technical coordination in one remarkable sight.
