Charlotte is a financial center in North Carolina and the second largest banking hub in America after New York City. Tall buildings such as the Bank of America Corporate Center and the Duke Energy Center shape the skyline and mark the business heart of the region with their visible presence.
The city was founded in 1768 and named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, at a crossing of old Native American trading paths. Over the centuries it grew from a small settlement into a major economic center of the American South.
The NASCAR Hall of Fame, the Discovery Place science exhibits, and the Mint Museum draw visitors from across North Carolina and neighboring states.
