Fred C. Babcock/ Cecil M. Webb Wildlife Management Area

Fred C. Babcock/ Cecil M. Webb Wildlife Management Area, Wildlife management area in Charlotte and Lee Counties, Florida

Description

The Fred C. Babcock and Cecil M. Webb Wildlife Management Area is a large protected land in southern Florida containing pine flatwoods, marshes, and Webb Lake within its borders. The varied habitats provide space for numerous wildlife species, including red-cockaded woodpeckers and northern bobwhite.

History

The Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission acquired roughly 19,200 acres from Fred Babcock in 1941, establishing the foundation for this protected area. The land was later expanded, and today it encompasses a significant area dedicated to conservation and sustainable use.

Culture

The grounds have hosted field trials since 1957, drawing hunters who practice traditional quail hunting methods in regulated settings. The clubhouses and stables visible across the property reflect how this activity shaped the area's character over decades.

Practical

The area is accessible via a dedicated Interstate-75 exit, making arrival straightforward for most visitors. Plan to bring gear appropriate for outdoor activities, as conditions vary greatly across the different habitats and seasons.

Did you know?

The property uses regular controlled burns in prairies and pine flatwoods to maintain natural habitats and support wildlife populations. This fire-management practice is essential for numerous rare plants and animals found in the region.
